H.F. Ito’s last wishes were that donations could be made to Shintaido of America to help support his vision both now and into the future. In part, he asked that these donations be used to help foster gatherings in four sites where shintaido arts including Taimyo were central to him. These places include: the forest in France where Nicole’s parents’ cremains are spread/scattered; Ocean Beach, San Francisco, CA; Mt. Tamalpais, Mill Valley, CA; and the fields of Mount Asama, Japan.
These four sites were core to Ito’s love and development of shintaido, both personally and as an instructor.

Excerpt from Ito Gaiden - compiled and edited by Andrew Stones

Haruyoshi Fugako Ito was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1942. He went to Chuo University in Tokyo, and in 1965 graduated with a degree in law. At age 18, whilst at university, he began training in Shotokai Karate with Shigeru Egami, and at 21, after less than four years of practice, he was awarded the top Shotokai rank of 5th Dan. He collaborated closely with Hiroyuki Aoki throughout the early 60’s in researching methodologies for creating a sogobudo according to Shigeru Egami’s wishes, and in 1965 was one of the founding members of the Rakutenkai group, heading up the martial arts division, the Heihokenkyukai. In 1971 he founded the Sogobudo Renmei, which in 1972 became the Shintaido Kyokai. Since 1975 he has been Shintaido’s most energetic itinerant teacher, traveling the globe in his tireless quest to spread Shintaido on the world stage. In 2006 he suffered a severe stroke, and was hospitalized. He surprised hospital staff however, with the speed of his recovery, and was soon instructing them on the best ways to rehabilitate him. After his recovery he continued to travel the world to fulfill his busy schedule of teaching. He lead seminars in Shintaido, Life Exercise, Anma massage, Wu style Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and Conflict resolution, in countries as far-a-field as France, UK, America, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Romania.

In 2001 he founded the Taimyo Network for Peace, which he regarded to be one of his most significant achievements in his latter years. *

    * An update since the writing of Ito Gaiden - from the Home page of the GTC website: The Global Taimyo Community (GTC) formed after September 11, 2001 as the Taimyo Network for World Peace, as a peaceful and compassionate response to the violence of 9/11 and subsequent retaliatory violence. As we practice, we see ourselves standing around the globe holding hands in a protective embrace.
GTC believes that Taimyo Kata can function as a movement form through which we can search and/or heal our inner world as well create better relationships with our outer world — neighbors, community near and far, and Nature — beyond time and space.
